What is BiPAP?

A bilevel positive airway pressure (BIPAP) machine features two pressure settings, high and low, to deliver room air through a mask into your airway. To match your natural breathing rhythm, the high pressure setting is used for inhaling, and the low pressure setting is used for exhaling. Many people who use a BIPAP machine for sleep disorders find that it is an easily tolerated way to keep the airway while sleeping. Similar to BIPAP is a VPAP, which is the term ResMed uses to describe their variable PAP breathing machines.

Americare Respiratory Services carries the S9 line of ResMed VPAP machines and the System One line of Respironics BIPAP machines. These machines are effective for treating sleep apnea, a potentially life-threatening condition that affects millions of people unknowingly. If you don’t seem to get quality sleep and you want to find out if you have sleep apnea, you may want to consider participating in a home sleep test. Also, a sleep medicine doctor can prescribe the most appropriate PAP machine for your situation.
