What is VPAP?
A variable positive airway pressure (VPAP) machine is an auto-adjusting, bilevel breathing device made by ResMed. It is similar to a BIPAP machine, which provides two levels of pressure to match your natural inhalation and exhalation rhythm. A VPAP machine may be used to treat sleep apnea and other sleep disorders. Some people with lung disease and respiratory disorders may also benefit from using a VPAP machine. Each VPAP machine has two pressure levels – high and low – that can be adjusted manually or automatically during exhalation depending on the type of machine you choose.
The use of a breathing device at home is a life-saving treatment for people suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. People with sleep apnea experience repeated episodes of stopped breathing (apneic episodes) while sleeping with or without waking up.
